                                  Version 2.2
                                 Release Notes

                      Harris Computer Systems Corporation

     1. Introduction

This document provides an overview of release 2.2 of the NightSim
application scheduler. NightSim is a real-time tool that is part of
the NightStar(TM) development environment. It provides an X Window
System(TM) and OSF/Motif(TM) graphical user interface (GUI) to the
frequency-based scheduler (FBS) and performance monitor real-time
     facilities.

The NightSim Scheduler window allows you to perform the full range of
functions associated with the FBS. Functions include configuring a
scheduler, selecting a timing source, scheduling programs, saving and
restoring scheduler configurations, running a simulation, and viewing
     scheduling data.

The Monitor window provides a comprehensive interface to the
Performance Monitor facility. Functions include selecting a
scheduler, enabling and disabling monitoring for each process,
clearing performance values, setting the timing mode, and sending
performance data either to the screen or to a text file. Data that is
to be sent to the screen can be filtered and sorted in a variety of
     ways.

     3. Prerequisites

Prerequisites for the NightSim release 2.2 are described in sections
     3.1 and 3.2.

     3.1 Software Prerequisites

o PowerUX operating system release 3.1 or later.
o The Frequency-Based Scheduler (fbs) kernel module.
o X Window System release 5.2 or later.
        o Elan License Manager(TM)

For more information about configuring your system to support
NightSim, see the PowerUX NightSim Quick Reference.

     3.2 Hardware Prerequisites

        o Any Night Hawk(TM) Series 6000, Power MAXION(TM), or
          PowerHawk(TM) system.
o An X Window System display device, such as an X terminal.

     4. Installation

The NightSim product is installed as a software package using the
Software Packaging Tools. The package name is nsim. Refer to the
chapter "Installing Add-On Software" in the PowerUX System
Administration, Volume 1 (Pub. No. 0890429), the PowerUX Release Notes
(Pub. No. 0890454-3.1), and the pkgadd(1M) command for instructions on
     software installation.

Prior to installing NightSim, you should have installed the fbs
package, which contains the kernel module that provides FBS and

     performance monitor functions.

NightSim may be installed in either the root directory or elsewhere.
When you run pkgadd(1M) to install NightSim, you are prompted to enter
the name of the directory for installation. If you want to install in
the root directory, just press the <return> key at the prompt.
Otherwise, enter the name of the directory where you want NightSim
installed. If this directory does not exist, the installation
procedures attempt to create it for you.

NightSim must be run with the Elan License Manager. Follow the steps
in the "Obtaining Licenses" section of the Elan License Manager
Release Notes (0891055-Rel.#); the feature alias is NightSim. If you
are not already running the Elan License Manager, if you do not have a
copy of the Elan License Manager Release Notes, or if you need a
license key, contact Concurrent Software Distribution at 1-800-666-
     5405.

     5. New Features in this Release and Changes from Previous Releases

The following list describes the changes between this release and
release 2.1 of the NightSim product.

o A response file has been added to the software packaging files,
allowing the package to be installed without stopping and asking
the user questions about the installation.

o A bug that was causing Select Active Scheduler to show incorrect
          data has been fixed.

o A label showing the current resolution of time-based performance
data has been added to the lower-right corner of the Monitor
          window .

o Minor changes in margin widths and size and spacing of widgets
have been made, including widening Scheduler Key fields to accept
          5 digits.

     6. Cautions

The purpose of the PowerUX NightSim Quick Reference is only to assist
you in getting started with the use of NightSim. It does not contain
the detailed procedural information that a user's guide typically
provides. For additional assistance with using NightSim, consult the
on-line help and the nsim(1) man page.
